For families looking to introduce their kids to skiing and snowboarding, Serra da Estrela is a great option - even when natural snowfall is scarce, as the resort produces artificial snow whenever possible. Since beginners don’t need many slopes to learn and practice, it's an ideal spot for young skiers. Plus, its convenient location just a few hours from Lisbon and Porto makes it an easy getaway. If weather conditions prevent access to the resort, there are still plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy in Seia, Covilhã and Penhas da Saúde.
Additional activities for families
- Snow fun without skiing – Even if kids are not skiing, they can still enjoy playing in the snow, sledding or building snowmen. Some local businesses rent sleds.
- Ice Arena - Families should visit this place for a fun and active experience, whether skating for the first time or enjoying a classic winter activity together. It's a great alternative when skiing isn’t an option and offers a safe, entertaining environment for kids and adults alike.
- Serra da Estrela Natural Park – A great place for family-friendly hikes, even in winter (weather permitting).
- Museu do pão (Bread Museum) in Seia – An interactive museum where kids can learn about traditional bread-making and even try some delicious pão da Serra.
- Museu do brinquedo (Toy Museum) in Seia – A charming museum with a collection of vintage toys that can be a great alternative for a cold day.
- Lagoa Comprida – A beautiful lake that’s accessible year-round. In winter, it may be partially frozen, making for a scenic stop.
Practical tips for parents
- Best time to visit – The snow season is typically from December to March, but it’s best to check live cams before going.
- Clothing advice – Dress in layers, bring waterproof gloves and make sure kids have warm boots.
- Driving considerations – If snow is forecasted, check if snow chains are required or rent a 4x4 vehicle.
Enjoy the snow!
Love,
Vera
